Japanese YKK zippers, which are coated with polyurethane, meet the Water Tight standard for water resistance. However, some retailers refer to these zippers as waterproof, and the information they provide is very misleading. Waterproof means the ability to withstand the pressure of a water column of at least two meters for a long period of time. Zippers with a coating do not have this ability under any circumstances. In addition, if you bend over or put something in your pocket, the zipper will bulge and a small gap will appear through which water can penetrate. The W.L. Gore standard (and all other manufacturers who have adopted it) states that water must not get on the body. Pockets are not specified because there is no reliable solution for waterproofing an outer pocket. Even cover strips or flaps are not 100% protection. This means that outer pockets can leak during heavy or prolonged rain. Today's trend is for the lightest possible jackets with exposed zippers, and leakage into pockets is a given. An inner pocket is provided for documents, cell phones, etc., which is perfectly protected against water penetration.
